Dawg E. Dawg
ParticipantThis this the first I’ve heard the name (don’t watch much college at all), so I won’t offer an opinion on him yet. But, I will say I am EXTREMELY leery of Big 12 QBs given their recent history. The lack of defense makes it too easy for them to put up inflated stats.
Again, not ruling him out, but I’m hesitant to say the least.

DawgstyleParticipantThe concerns about big 12 QBs are legitimate. However, I think the thing that gives me cause to believe that this guy might actually be special is the fact that he was surrounded by a supporting cast devoid of talent that has almost no shot at ever playing in the NFL.
This isn’t Johnny Manziel with the 6’5″ Mike Evans, Sam Bradford with Trent Williams protecting his blind side and the dominant Jermaine Gresham to throw to, Brandon Weeden with Justin Blackmon or Robert Griffin with Josh Gordon and fellow first rounder Kendall Wright. Mahomes is on an island. He has a terrible offensive line, no running game for support, and his #1 and #2 WRs are 5’11” tall. Literally no one on his offense is projected to be drafted at the time I write this.
That’s a different situation than most Big 12 Qbs have had recently. While it certainly doesn’t guarantee his success, the lack of talent around him has caused many of his throws to be in much tighter windows than they would otherwise be. Yes, Big 12 defenses are bad, but outside of Mahomes, so is the Texas Tech offense (a fact that will become more widely known after his departure I suspect).
Not trying to change your opinion, just some additional perspective regarding the situations other recently drafted Big 12 QBs came from.

ShooterModeratorSo if not Trubisky, who?
Honestly……..no one. This QB class is garbage. At least as far as 1st round grades/talent go. It’s full of EJ Manuels, Geno Smiths, and smoke and mirrors. Busts, busts everywhere. More than you’ll find on any topless beach in America right now. I pass on all of them.
The guy you bring up, I’ll shoot ya straight I know nothing about him. Have never even seen him throw a pass. I can’t fathom how he’d be worth a 1st round pick though. a 3rd? A 4th? Sure, why the hell not, I’m down.
But as far as 1st round QB’s go……..I pass on all the “frontrunners”.

That’s like saying you got a good deal because the price you paid is $200 off the MSRP. Tom Brady was taken in the 6th round. Aaron Rodgers was taken after Alex Smith. Russell Wilson was taken after Brandon Weeden. Derek Carr was taken after Johnny Manziel and Blake Bortles. Dak Prescott was taken after Jared Goff, Carson Wentz, Paxton Lynch, Jacoby Brissett (whom the Patriots will be KEEPING if they trade Jimmy G. away), Kody Kessler and Connor Cook. Matt Ryan was called “a poor man’s Brady Quinn” in pre-draft analysis. There was an actual debate about whether Ryan Leaf was a better prospect than Peyton Manning. I’ve heard that there aren’t many good QB prospects in this draft, yet I remember many people who thought we would be wise to pass on Goff/Wentz/Lynch because the 2017 class would be much stronger. The bottom line is that no one knows what this class holds. What I’m saying right now is that you should remember the name Patrick Mahomes II. I think by the time the pre-draft process is over, he will go from “a guy I’ve never heard of” to “wow, they’re really hyping this guy up”.
I’d love to take credit for “discovering him”, but it was all YouTube. I was watching game tape of Trubisky and got sent to a video of Mahomes. I really liked what I saw and started researching the team. I saw the Texas Tech rushing stats and the WR depth chart and saw no one that looked remotely like they would be highly sought after in the NFL. Then I read the preseason reports on the piecemeal offensive line. The stats, the domination (over 800 yards of offense in a single game, 734 yards through the air, 5 TD and 1 INT with another 85 yards on the ground with 2 additional rushing touchdowns), this guy takes over games, even when he can’t get the W, there is no doubt about who the best player on the field is. Mel Kiper even has him ranked #2 after Trubisky (and I believe he might actually have a higher ceiling, like Marcus Mariota with a bigger arm).
I’m not buying into the whole “garbage” draft class. Cynicism is cool right now. There are a few guys in this class that have a unique blend of size and skills that has been lacking in previous classes. I can’t wait to see how they perform at the combine!

DawgSoldierParticipantI think if the Browns want Trubisky they can get as they can move back from 1 possibly and certainly have the ammo to move up from 12

I think there is a real possibility that the 49ers, Bears or Jets take Trubisky. If Trubisky is our guy, they (the Browns FO) have to take him at #1. That said, he’s not my guy and there’s no way I draft anyone other than Myles Garrett at #1. I’m also looking for a safety, and I think some combination of Hooker/Adams/Peppers will still be available at #12. Then, as I’m sure you’ve gathered, I’d be looking to acquire Mahomes.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Houston tried to move up for a QB either, especially with a team like the Chargers or the Panthers that just had down years.
