ParticipantNot bad, other than letting go of Demario Davis. Not sure what your thinking is on that one.

DawgPoundDudeParticipantOther than the first three names you mention in the draft, I don’t know on the who’s who. Paired with the names you’ve thrown out in the FA category however, I would be absolutely stoked to see us sign those guys.
Amazing that you’re the first person I’ve noticed to mention McDonald (though it’s possible I missed something somewhere). He’s a decent safety, and it would make a ton of sense to have someone help transition the defense.
I remember a couple years back when we had a safety named Jim Leonard, and a much better defense. He wasn’t great, but he was pretty good…more importantly, he was like having an extra coach on that side of the ball because he knew the scheme so well. Next year he retires, and Pettine’s defense goes to shit.
Now, based on those first three names in the draft part…I like it, a lot. And I would absolutely shit a walrus nugget if Adams falls to us at 12. As I said, I haven’t done a bunch of homework beyond that (that’s why we have you doing it, DS), so I’ll just assume you know what you’re doing and smile and nod when the picks come in. 😛

DawgstyleParticipantI would do back flips if this comes to pass. I agree that Garrett should be the #1. I LOVE the move to pass on a QB at #12 and pick up Adams (If this happens…just YES!). I love grabbing Mahomes at the top of the second, and I think either he, Watson or Trubisky will still be available at that point, so even if it’s not Mahomes your getting a comparable guy. I disagree with letting the QB sit too long, regardless of which one we take. If halfway through the season we have only a win or two, I think the rookie goes in and you put him in a sink or swim situation knowing that USC’s Sam Darnold is there if he fails. Yes, it would be tough to endure another 1-15 season, but it would be worth it to get a sure-fire QB prospect like Darnold. If the rookie does well and you don’t end up with the #1 overall pick, that’s not the worst thing either.
While I believe that QB is the most important position on the roster, as has been pointed out by others, I don’t think Tom Brady could get this team to 8-8 (although I imagine it would be close, look at Indy without Manning, then after Luck). The roster (in it’s current form, I’ll reserve final judgement for after the draft and Free Agency) simply has too many holes. Add Garrett and Adams to the the defense and there should be marked improvement (especially if we land TJ McDonald in Free Agency). I’d go as far as to say I’d roll the dice on the QB spot one more time, take Obi Melifonwu at #33 and see if I can land Mahomes at 53. That would drastically alter our backfield and with Adams at FS, Melifonwu at SS and McDonald/Haden on the outside, make it incredibly difficult to pass on us. If Mahomes/Watson/Trubisky are off the board at #53, stick with your Gareon Conley pick, roll into 2017 with our current QBs (let Kessler and Griffin compete for the starting job) knowing that if they fail, Darnold is waiting in the wings.
That said, I like your draft. I do think Mahomes is going to surprise some people on the field, but I definitely anticipate growing pains. Even at his best with Texas Tech, there were a lot of “No! No! No! YES!” moments. Good mock DS!

ParticipantDStyle, youre off your rocker waiting to 53. If we pass on QB at 12 (and I don’t think we should, I’ll be a nervous wreck waiting to see if any of them make it to 33), we have to get a QB at 33. Have to. It’s enough to hope that SF, CHI, NYJ, and BUF pass on a WB in the 1st, but to hope they do it a 2nd time? No way I roll the dice there.
As to the QB prospect for next year, I have no interest in considering that in any strategy. Because 1.) if he’s surefire, we’d need to the #1 pick to get him, and we barely got it this year. And #2.) there are countless examples of players everybody thought would be sure fire picks struggling in their final season, and not being thought of so highly come the draft. Teddy B, Kizer, and Brian Brohm to name a few.

Patience is a virtue. The Cowboys, Raiders and Seahawks have both recently employed similar draft strategies, and it has served them well. The biggest mistake most franchises make is putting the QB in a position where they are asked to do too much too soon. The best way to ensure this does not happen is through a dominant defense and a strong running game that facilitates the play action.

Get the number 1 pick -or- mortgage your future (which means you better have the rest of the pieces in place now). Unless we are extremely active in Free Agency and just crush the draft, we will be in contention for a top 5 pick next year. This is not a team that is just a year or two away. This is year 2 of a 5 year rebuild. Secondly, while I agree that there have been high profile picks that have struggled, Darnold is a Manning/Luck caliber prospect coming from a pro style offense. There’s very little question about how his skill set will translate to the next level.
Now, for the record, I still think Mahomes has HOF potential. Historically, the Browns haven’t been able to help QBs reach their potential, and while I like Hue a lot, losing Pep Hamilton casts a shadow on what finally seemed to be a resolved issue. Until we prove otherwise, a QB who has those skill sets (which is not available in this free agent or draft class) will be a more attractive option than prospects with potential (which this free agent and draft class are full of). Darnold needs far less development than any of the FA or draft prospects this year. You have to take what the draft gives you, and the immediate future seems to favor the construction of an “enviable cockpit” <insert your mom joke here> instead of reaching for a QB.
For the record, it was the parity of the three (Watson, Trubisky, Mahomes) that has pushed me to this conclusion. The best QB in this draft class will owe as much to his situation as his skill set, because frankly, their skills are very evenly matched.
